Text Research

Handmade stenciled type VS Photoshop.

The range of images I have captured throughout making this idea have given me a lot of potential to play around with the layout and font of "Design Museum" and the date. After playing around with a range of photos, these are the ones in which I feel gives a good idea on what looks bad and what looks good.

With this one here, the simplicity and text of the layout while using a grainy somewhat candid shot of this photograph gives a weird mix of the composition and I don't this this works particularly well. Also, it eliminates the potential colour readability of this poster destroying the whole purpose.

With this one the way the main image is angled gives it that contemporary feel compared to viewing a lot of things stright on in which I feel is a nice effect. I also feel the use of the digital text subtly placed in the corner is not too overpowering to the user when reading the poster straight off.

Out of all the potential poster layouts, this one is my favourite. Theres a good balanc of natural lighting on the shot which makes it a very crisp and easy read. While i feel the use of th stencil font in the corner works harmoniously well with the whole layout.

After looking at all these layouts and experiementing and exploring the different aspects of stencil cutting as well as mixing text together with Photoshop, there is a clear relationship between thewo which could work really well. However, I feel I can create a poster made entirely out of paper without no digital skills at all. I want to show how the skills workshops has improved my understanding for paper and express this in a really unique tone.

Poster Idea Continued...

So to start off the poster, I thought the "100" deserves the centre stage since this is what we're emphasizing the most about so I decided to make this large and centred with a stencil inspired font but slightly changed.

As I progressed on , I added the rest of the text apart from Design Museum and the date. I want to experiment how well hand made text works with digital text. Also during the research of GF Smith paper, they have used and created some very eye catching and bold colours so I thought this theme should be implemented in some way to continue the idea of creating something easily readable from a distace...

As you can see from the images above, the good thing about stencil work is that you can easily mix and match the nagative space to see what works best.

Contining the theme of bright colours, I decided to give the 100 years the golden approval it deserves by placing some yellow paper underneath it to give this effect...

WHat I really like about the effect of the yellow paper used is again the natural drop shadows created, especially when flash is used. An effect ive only seen on Photoshop!

Now I wanted to see how well it looks when photographed behind the white background under controled lighting again. Here are the results..

Again, like I have mentioned before, it is amazing how the lgiht can dramatically change the effect, and atmosphere of a photo in which you can see in this range of shots here. I'm really looking forward to how these ideas could potentially come out when it comes to adding a mix of digital loving.

Creating damage with Stencil Work.

After looking at the potential of using final sculpture images and digitally adding on text in the production stage, I wanted to look at the other end of the scale, hand made type.

Something in which I personally enjoy doing is creating text by hand. I started off by simply writing my name on some paper and then stenciling it out..

At the time of cutting, it was a beautiful sunny day and the light from the window casted some interesting shadow effects so I decided to explore this more by take a few shots with some controlled light...

As an effect, it did look very nice and gave a new insight into exploring the negative space around it. However, it was very difficult to get a good clear angle of my name casting on the other side as the smallest movements can make the shadow more blurry and unoticable. On the other hand though, I want to see how this looks when the text for the brief is added on...

Let's get started with some Ideas then...

To start off and get a natural flare of the potential of this task, I used some of the images used throughout the final structure to create a range of different poster layouts and styles. I kept to the simplistic sans serif theme GF Smith have thoroughly used in the past in which i decided Century Gothic was the most sensible option since the letters are very circular which represents zeros essentially.

When playing around in Photoshop, these are some of the outcomes which shows how many different potentials you can portray from the following information:

The key to creating a successful poster is by following these points;

• Good use of typography used throughout,
• Aesthetically pleasing layout,
• Bold and eye catching from a distance,
• Easily readable,
• Show off the professional quality of GF Smith Papers.

In the brief it specifically says that the final poster for this must be in A2 Portrait format, however I wanted to get a feel for the landscape layout in order to understand how it would work with possible constraints when it comes to final post production of the poster.

Task Two - Celebrating 100 years of GF Smith Paper.

From the skills that I have learnt from task 1 with the help of Richard Sweeney and Natalie, a number of ideas came into mind in what I could do for this task in terms of creating a poster celebrating the companies work.

From what I've learnt from browsing the gallery of work on their website, they like to use sans serif while a use of bold colours with simplistic backgrounds are used. I like how they've used overlapping techniques to not make it just contemporary but also still readable.

For example the last image above representing the union jack combined trough the text is an excellent way to portray the origin of the paper while representing the country in a very aesthetically simplistic way.

The Final Structure Continued..

Now after a bit more tweaking,I decided to fold over the other side in order to strengthen the overall structure as well as hopefully improving its aesthetic appearance. I feel I have definitely achieved this. The structure feels more sturdy and I feel the spirally effect with the beginings of a cocoon inspired idea work really well. Again, the use of shadow and negative space really enhance these pictures of the final structure. Overall I'm very pleased with the outcome.
